Nancy Sherwood's post reminded me of a lovely obstetrician from Brazil who
visited our Family Birthing Center (my former life) in Michigan back in, oh,
probably 1980.  Two comments he made have stuck with me:

1.  Male obstetricians will always do too many episiotomies; their
testosterone levels are too high to take the wait and see, gentle approach.
 (He compared episiotomy and laceration rates of male OBs in Brazil to TBAs
(Traditional Birth Attendants) in Brazil.

2.  Vigorous suctioning of the nose with the bulb syringe can actually biopsy
tiny bits of the inside of the baby's nose.  Since then I'm reluctant to use
the bulb syringe unless absolutely necessary because the baby CAN'T breathe.
