Her question to me was, "What should I do? What would you do?" To which I
could not answer. I cannot give her medical advice. I cannot tell her what I
would do. Clearly, she wanted to be told what to do, rather than what 50
other mothers have done.

He stated in no uncertain terms, "You CAN NOT breastfeed with this
medication in your system!" and I told her, "According to research, there is
no reason why you should wean the baby for 7 days." Who carries the more
weight?
Dear Friends:
    Heather shares a common dilemma.

Those of us that are not physicians have been trained to defer. So when a
physician says X, the best we can say is "well, according to the research Y
is compatible with breastfeeding." Childbirth education films have disclaimers:
"the information in this film is not meant to substitute for medical advice."

What is wrong with saying, "Personally, since you asked me for my
opinion, I myself would want 15 good reasons from a variety of reputable sources not
to breastfeed before I would stop, and give my baby the substitute that is
linked with so many serious consequences." Then you can offer your reference
(e.g. Hale) and suggest she look on the Internet.

    warmly,
