LLL's Womanly Art of Breastfeeding (sixth revised edition - 1997),
pp.371-373, suggests that "the effect [of breastfeeding] is strongest for
premenopausal breast cancer, although some studies show that breastfeeding
lowers the risk of breast cancer after menopause as well. Protection against
breast cancer is related to duration of breastfeeding, with the greatest
risk reduction seen in women whose total amount of breastfeeding, for one or
more children, totals several years." The excerpt goes on to reference
several articles from the American Journal of Epidemiology.
