Dear Patricia,
My real question is whether all this "reflux" that is being
diagnosed is really true "reflux" -- regurgitation of stomach contents and
often high amounts of not just the latest food ingested but of stomach acids
that cause pain and even tissue erosion, versus "spitting up" which is a
very normal baby thing to do with immature muscles, horizontal postions,
occassional overindulgence, or without specific cause, the urping up of milk
in smallish and sometimes not so smallish quantities WITHOUT damage to
tissues nor any apparent discomfort to the child.
Any child who vomits whole meals, who continues to regurgitate food
into the second year, who is not gaining appropriately, who cries in pain
after regurgitating, who ________________ fill in the poor health outcome
here... should be followed for TRUE health concern.
But, the point of my post, again, is that I am seeing/hearing so
many mothers saying their baby has "reflux" disorder/disease/syndrome etc
and are being prescribed medications and formula and cereal in any
combination when there IS NO reason for it.
Perhaps the doctors would like to step in and give the clinical
signs and symptoms for when is "reflux" really "reflux" and when is it a non
named normal thing babies do that creates a little extra laundry for mom?
In other words, if it's really "reflux" is most assuredly is more
than a laundry problem, how often is is really
"reflux"???????????????????????????

this from a diagnosed person with TRUE reflux or "GURD" who was on "reglan"
(how ironic, eh?) in her twenties for it! and who had a baby who spit up
great volumes, but outgrew it normally at 6-8 months old...
