The second case is a mom whose baby nursed poorly in the hospital, was
"fussy" since birth, (primip--11 hour vaginal birth, epidural). He didn't
nurse right after birth, went for 12 hours w/o nursing after being circ'ed.
She had a good hand pump and pumped in the hospital and was getting an ounce
of colustrum! But, he also was getting bottles, got ABM once (per ped b/c she
called to complain about his fussiness). Her milk was not even in yesterday
(day 5) and she was not pumping very often either. I made a home visit and
could feel the tension in his little body.
I often find that when mothers say "he's just so strong", that he is
hypertonic. His head even looked odd and had that look as if he had a
migraine. We tried to entice him to nurse, but it seemed that he just
couldn't get organized enough. He was very gassy and quite miserable. I
referred her to a Network Chiropractor and she called late to tell me she was
thrilled. He seemed like a different baby to her--much more relaxed and
happier. He still is not nursing, but I am going to see her again today, now
that she has had a chance to increase her milk supply and the baby is doing
better. One more thing--her nipples were bright pink and sore. She started
using vinegar and said they felt much better with that (she had multiple abx
for UTI's in pregnancy). I also told her aboput gv. She told me last night
she felt she had another UTI, but was afraid to take more abx b/c of the
yeast, so I referred her to a naturopath who she saw today. The chiropractor
told me the baby's sacrum, all the way to his cranium, as well as his jaw
were in distress. As often as I see the results of Network, cranial-sacral
and other body-work, I am still so moved by the dramatic results. I truly do
not know how she could nurse this baby in the state he was in. He will see
the chiro again tomorrow.
