Nikki asks who is responsible if a mother cuts herself on the sharp edge of
the syringe barrel.
I assume you are asking about a case where a mother gets wrong information, or
misunderstands it, about the use of such a device. Once the barrel is cut,
you insert the plunger 'backwards' so that the former pointed end of the
syringe is away from the breast.
That doesn't answer Nikki's question about liability, I know, but I just had
to make sure this got said.
While I've got you all here, let me say a big 'amen' to Denise Fisher's post
on shields. I have seen that Paula Meier study be seemingly WILLFULLY
misunderstood by incompetent, ignorant professionals (and yes, I am being
judgmental here, because the judgment is warranted) in order to justify their
continued misuse of shields for every imaginable BF problem. What holds for
selected premature babies in a setting with high BF competence does not hold,
at all, for the typical setting where shields are rampant and competence
sub-optimal.
Sigh.
I've started collecting the train wreck stories, as case studies. Obviously
my view is skewed because I don't see the successes. The failures, however,
are bad enough to make me very cautious. 'Enabling women to breastfeed'
advises that unless *you* are going to follow the dyad until the shield is no
longer needed, *you* shouldn't dispense it. I think that is an excellent
policy. If you work in a system with sure support, that's one thing. Most
shields are not dispensed in such systems.

on my way to talk about my master's degree proposal, involving RPS, with my
fellow students... THERE! it's OUT!
