I had a client that was getting a rash every time she nursed her 2 month old. It would fade, but when she nursed again, it would come back. After consulting with some other LCs, we determined that it was a hormonal reaction that should go away in a month or so. I can tell you that it did in fact go away within about a month. I did send this client to the dermatologist/her OB/GYN just to make sure. And they both agreed. Because her rash popped up in different areas of her torso and chest, she did try a topical cream and low dose Benadryl.

Where is the rash? Does the rash itch? Does she sweat a lot when she pumps? She can take some low dose Benadryl-like the children's version of Benadryl-to help if it does itch. Depending on where it is, she can also use a topical anti-itch cream. She should not put it on her nipples of course, but on the breasts should be fine.

One of the LCs I spoke to said she's had several mothers with this same reaction. It is completely hormonal-- hope this helps. Have a blessed day,Merideth M. Buell, BFPCDSHS [log in to unmask]
