Hello!
I am back after a long weekend of fun in the mountains, with a query about
Zantac prescribed for infants with reflux. My question has two parts: the first
relates to the mom whom I posted about in September whose 5 week-old
leaked milk out her nose while feeding. To sum up--I finally saw the mom
about 10 days after my posts and found that the baby was tongue-tied. The
labial frenulum was also very tight. Mom booked an appointment with a
pediatric ENT who concurred that these conditions existed, however he didn't
see the need to clip "unless the infant was failure to thrive." To top it off, he
added, "but I sure wouldn't want to be the one nursing her." Um, so much for
compassion. Well, baby and mom continued to chug along, with some latch
and positioning modifications that seemed to help a little. Baby, however,
never really stooled frequently. Her stooling tailed off until it was about once
per week with much distress. I advised mom to go back to her pediatrician
(she had been phoning in and getting advice to do a rectal temp or give Karo
Syrup in a bottle). Turns out the baby has Hirschprung's. Surgery was
performed and baby seemed to recover well. For about a week after surgery
she stooled 4-6 diapers per day, yellow, seedy and abundant. At baby's follow-
up pediatrician put baby on Zantac and Prevacid for reflux. Mom noticed
shortly thereafter that stooling ceased again. By the time she called me it had
been another 5 days between bm's. When the mom took baby to the surgeon
for follow-up he said that the baby's dose of Zantac was about double what it
should have been.
Now, for the second part of the question. Another mom called me today. Baby
boy is 9 weeks old. He had been happy & gaining (went home at 6.0 and was
12 lbs. last week) but dr. diagnosed him with reflux and put him on Zantac.
Surprise, surprise, he hasn't stooled in 8 days. The only other new things
happening with this mom and baby are; 1. baby had a vaccination last week
(Mom couldn't remember which one), 2 . Dr. had prescribed vitamins for the
baby. (The ever-popular Poly-vi-Sol). Upon further discussion, mom
remembered that baby had started Zantac a couple weeks before this past
visit (so that would be the end of September), and baby's stools changed to
where they were "waterier" than before.
When I searched the archives, I didn't find a match between Zantac and
infrequent stooling. Can anyone help these poor mommies? Also, why does it
seem like every other baby is being diagnosed with reflux?
Thank you kindly,
Leslie Cree
(i turn 43 on Wed. and something is happening on Friday...)
