Interestingly Lars Hanson is very interested in the use of ingested heated
oats (porridge, I guess) in the prevention of mastitis in women. When I
spoke with him at a conference last year he said he was thinking about
undertaking a collaborative study into prevention of mastitis in women in
developing countries, using daily doses of heated oats. My memory is hazy
and although I did make some notes (I cant find them) but I think he had
done some lab work that showed heated oats contained a peptide similar to
FIL (feedback inhibitor of lactation). So perhaps this time old tradition
used in cows may well have a scientific basis and perhaps an application in
the treatment of mastitis in women.
