hi,

i just wanted to send a caution based on an experience i had with a client
recently. this baby had weight gain issues in the beginning, but overcame
them and went on to feed and gain well after the first couple of weeks. i
wasn't contacted by the family until baby got her first tooth at 4 1/2
months of age and mom's areola was lacerated repeatedly - nobody could
figure out why. As soon as i saw the baby, however, it was obvious. A
very tight lingual frenulum - classic, in fact - translucent and close to
the clearly notched tip of the tongue. the baby could not extend the
tongue enough to cover her lower teeth and the new teeth were chopping up
the areola (and it was the areaola, not the nipple, since the actual latch
was good, it was just tongue placement that was a problem).

the sad part is, neither the doc or the ent would agree with me, so the dad
got scared off and the family opted not to clip. if this had been caught
by the LCs and docs when the newborn originally had weight gain issues, it
probably would have been a non-issue.

in short, i would urge you to consider at least sharing this info with the
family, and sending them brian palmer's web site (if you haven't already)
so they can know what to look out for if problems should arise in the future.

best of luck,
