dear women of lactnet,

i am a former labor doula and current non-working RN. i lurk here and
learn tons and am inspired. now i'm asking something for myself.
i'm looking for opinions.
i breastfeed my 22 month old son.
ever since my period returned when he was 16 months old i get
migraines with my cycles. usually at ovulation and again before onset
of bleeding.
i didnt get migraines before becoming a mother.
i have found that Imitrex (Sumatriptan Succinate) works for me, but i
realize i end up taking 2-4 25-mg tablets every month. According to
Kellymom.com it is an L3 medication
(L3 MODERATELY SAFE:
There are no controlled studies in breastfeeding women, however the
risk of untoward effects to a breastfed infant is possible; or,
controlled studies show only minimal non-threatening adverse effects.
Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the
potential risk to the infant.)

Today someone told me she suffers from the same cycle related
migraines and she takes Naproxen (aleve) prophylacticly Two weeks out
of the month she takes Aleve once in the morning, and once in the
evening.
In looking on Kellymom I found this about aleve
9.Aleve (Naproxen) is AAP-approved for nursing mothers, but (per
Hale) should be used with caution due to its long half-life and its
effect on baby's cardiovascular system, kidneys and GI tract; short-
term, infrequent or occasional use is not necessarily incompatible
with breastfeeding.
I guess I'm answering my own question - which is worse 2-4 Imitrex/
month or 14 aleve/month?

any opinions?

also I hope its okay to use this list for such a personal thing.
Please ignore this post if its a bad use of the list

Genevra
