My name is Stephanie Smith. I am a nursing student at Ivy Tech Community
College in Indianapolis, Indiana. My research indicates there are several
reasons to avoid breastfeeding. These reasons include an infant diagnosed
with galactosemia; a mother who has been infected with the human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV); a mother who is taking antiretroviral
medications; a mother who has untreated, active tuberculosis; a mother who
is infected with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I or type II; a mother
who is using or is dependent upon an illicit drug; a mother who is taking
prescribed cancer chemotherapy agents, such as antimetabolites that
interfere with DNA replication and cell division; and a mother who is undergoing
radiation therapies (however, such nuclear medicine therapies require only a
temporary interruption in breastfeeding). Are there any exceptions to these
recommendations? Are there any other reasons to avoid breastfeeding?
