Greetings all,

One more movie sighting to report - wet nursing is depicted in the film
"Indochine," a 1992 French film set in Vietnam directed by Regis Wargnier.

A baby is born to a couple on the run, a Vietnamese princess (adopted
daughter of a rubber plantation owner) and a French/Vietnamese soldier.
While they are hiding out with a traveling theatre troupe the soldier is
arrested with the baby, and the princess is convinced to escape with the
communists.

On the journey to prison, the father (still with the baby, see) and his
captors seek out the services of wet nurses. We see the baby breastfed by
a number of women who live and work along the river. The events are
portrayed as later becoming legendary. All the Indochine women along the
river are said to have claimed to have nursed the baby of the famous outlaw
couple - the princess and the soldier.

Sincerely,

Jeanne Badman, IBCLC, St. Paul, MN, USA
