Hi! I need some information from those of you who work in NICUs re: use
of fenugreek vs. reglan. In the hospital where I work, fenugreek may be a
galactogogue that may be "outlawed" unless I get input from more NICU's
and the policy on the use fenugreek. We have in the past year had some
micropreemies that have had GI perforations at 3 - 9 days of age. 1/2
were NPO, and some had just had feeds. None of the mothers had been on
Reglan or fenugreek. One of the NICU nurse's is now questioning the use
of fenugreek in preemies due to a misinterpretation of information from
2002 Medications and Mother's Milk. I have lent my copy of this book to
the NICU so they can read the information for themselves. I have talked
to 2 people who recommend fengugreek for use with preterm infants, but I
need more contacts. I need to know if anyone has experienced any type of
GI complications in preemies of mom's who use fenugreek. Also, how long
has fenugreek been "allowed" to be used by these moms.

Thank you for the information.

Linda Moore, RN, IBCLC
