Dear all:

I can't do a full lit search right now, but there is plenty of evidence that improperly mixing formula to higher than intended levels can cause hypernatremia. Since breast milk has as much if not more nutrients and the proper solute load, adding more solutes from formula will put the solute levels well beyond the FDA recommendations. The reason why those recommendations exist is because of stupid dangerous practices such as what this pediatrician is proposing. Plus all the research shows it is the VOLUME of milk that counts. I'm sure if you search on hypernatremia and formula you should be able to come up with articles -- do NOT restrict your search to recent articles, you'll probably have to go back to a time in the dark ages when such practices were rampant instead of now when you get renegade pediatricians who seem to have never even taken a science course or remember what their education on what happens to kidneys when you overload them with solutes.

Sorry, this one makes me more than a little grumpy.

Best regards,
Susan E. Burger
