Dear Lactnetters,
I've searched the archive with this concern to no avail. I recently saw a
mother for cracked nipples. She was in pain and hearing clicking noise while
nursing. I watched mom nurse (football hold) and baby's nose was about 2
inches away from breast. We adjusted the position. Everything else with
latch-on and positioning was great, but the clicking noise was still there.
Tongue was well over the gum. Mom said she could feel the tongue on her
nipples. The crack on the nipple was at the upper ridge of the nipple. I
would think that if it was the tongue, the crack would show on the center or
lower ridge of the nipple. Do I wait and see if positioning fixes problem
and see if clicking is "normal" for this baby? Parents say they both have
long tongues. Does baby also have this and if so is there anything I can
suggest to her besides the "pushing the tongue down and out" technique? I'm
fairly new at this, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Colette Acker, IBCLC
