Seems to me we need to be VERY careful about saying that co-sleeping can
increase risk of death. Of course, AAP may not see this but...in cases
where babies do die, parents will blame themselves no matter where that
baby was asleep. If we say "that is because you slept with your baby" we
are really adding to the guilt and anxiety felt by the family.

I find this "selective causality" very frustrating. What about the
correlations between time of immunizations and infant deaths? Never
mentioned in the public press. "Don't want to scare parents." Why are we
willing to scare them about co-sleeping?

France has now mandated that the Hep. B vaccine be given to no one under 14
years of age. Seems the Peds. there are concerned about high incidence of
serious advers reactions. Japan, I hear, is waiting until age two to give
vaccines and reporting lower incidence of SIDS in their infants.

I'm not really taking a side on the immunization issue here. I understand
that this issue is complex. I'm just pointing out how this "selective
causality" tends to err on the side of caution when it involvespractices
that promote successful breastfeeding, but to ignore significant indicators
when they involve medicine, pharmaceuticals......
