Hi all,

I have a baby that I'm concerned about and am posting with mom's permission. This baby is 13 weeks old now and stuck at 12# 13 ozs. At the 10th week, she had lost 9 oz. from the previous pedi visit 2 weeks before. A reweigh at 11 weeks was the same, no gain but a definite 9 oz. loss. There is no use birth control pills, bottles or paci's. Baby can feed whenever she wants. Baby's weight gain was great up until week 10. Physical exam by the pedi is normal. Watching them nurse was interesting, there was a lot of distraction by the 4 year old. Baby would pull off to join in and mom says the only difference in the baby is that she has become very social. After awhile the baby would go back to nurse but for short periods then get fussy and mom would have to take her out of position. THe baby would then not want to feed again. Latching was made better to get a more open mouth, not pursed lips. We have worked between pumping and herbs to increase moms milk supply because a weigh ac/pc was 1.6 ozs.. She has been doing breast compression and we tried an SNS. Baby will only occasionally use it well. No matter where the tube is, baby notices. It can't even be slipped into her mouth once she's latched. Baby won't take a bottle. Supplements of pumped milk by dropper or cup will work sometimes, but the baby only will take small amopunts, like 1/2 oz. Mom will feed in a quiet place but the feedings are frequent and very disjointed. The parents have rented a scale and are looking at milk transfer. There is milk transfer and increased supply but the baby's cues to end a feeding or that she is satisfied are not clear.
The baby is very social which is typical for this age but the feedings are constant and mom is ready to pull out her hair let alone worrying about the weight. There was weight gain of 6 ozs in one week with a lot of work on moms part but from last Thurs. to today, there has been none. What am I missing here? This family needs help. Thanks so much!
