Hi Nikki
Very trying times for this poor mom/baby. What I am thinking is what has
been called oversupply syndrome. what I am thinking is the lactose overload
(or lactose imbalance some say) caused gut irritation. I am getting this
idea from her history: "At 6 weeks of age my infant son began having blood
in his stools. The blood was dark and "speckled" his stools. As to his
bm's before 6 wks of age - he did
>have very frequent stools, 10 - 12 a day. Lactation consultants assured me
>that this was probably normal, he was nursing that often during that time.
>Because of a terribly fussy time during evening hours..."
This description is consistent w/ oversupply sydrome. You say he was gaining
well, was he gaining weight *really* well? Often they do gain in leaps, but
some don't gain well. It seems the blood did not really improve as mom began
eliminating many many foods. So this makes me think maybe it is not a food
sensitivity. Of course it could be. It is notable that the blood was bad "he
had a bad week" in december when mom was consuming many bean foods which are
high in protein.
I think I would recommend a one-sided nursing pattern for example use one
breast in a 4 hr period and then the other, expressing minimally for comfort
if needed. Maybe even have mom do the diet where she starts with just rice,
turkey, lamb (i can't think now of the few foods she should start with) and
gradually add other foods. this is well covered in our archives by those
more experienced than me in helping such dyads. Good luck. This is a low
tech 'diagnosis and treatment plan' but it might work? Or has she tried
this?
