Tina,
Yes, postpartum depression is more common in mothers who are depressed
and/or stressed or grieving during pregnancy.  Therapy provided during
pregnancy that focuses on the stressors (in this case the death of her
husband) is proving helpful in preventing postpartum depression in
research in progress here in NY City.  (If this mom lives near
Manhattan, NY, I could give you the number of the psychiatrist doing
this research. She is a lovely woman, and pro-bf too.)
