While I can understand the points about "specification" but there is also a need for cross training in sports. If you do the same exercise again and again the body gets "efficient" or "lazy" depending on how you think about it. This is particularly important in sparring in martial arts where you do need enough muscle memory to perform a number of kicks and punches without thinking about it, but you also have to be nimble enough to adapt to the sparring style of your partner and innovate. So, we often do drills that are much harder for upper belts than lower belts that are sequences of moves that are not familiar - to keep the brain in training. For the same reason, they also have been encouraging us to train beyond the standard "stand up" styles and take Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes to really work our brains as well as our bodies and break out of the mold so we are more creative.

So, as adults we have lots of different drinking glasses - wine glasses for different types of wine. Belgians seem to have different glasses for each type of beer. We drink from straws - we are versatile.

Yes, we all have our preferences and favorites, but humans are remarkably adaptable. I always think of my grandmother who had many many strokes and amazingly through sheer grit (back then physical therapy is nowhere near what it is now) managed to take herself from barely being able to talk and not able to move --- to walking and talking and taking care of herself. She was a very stubborn woman.
