I spoke to a mom who has been prescribed Soma (carisoprodol) for a painful
orthopedic condition. Her baby is 4 months old. She is debating whether or
not to take it. I have searched the Lactnet archives and found nothing solid
other than what I have already quoted her, the brief statement from Tom Hale's
book. I interpret it to mean that it concentrates in breastmilk (2-4x
maternal plasma level), but that there have been no reports of toxicity with
long-term use. It sounds to me like a different muscle relaxant would be
preferable. I have suggested that she ask her doctor if he could prescribe
something with a better and longer track record with nursing moms. Do any of
you have any input, suggestions, further info, especially hard data? You can
either post to Lactnet or e-mail me privately. TIA. Miriam
