Hi All,

AM posting a situation asking for advice for my good friend Sian Nelson,
IBCLC.

Baby is 6 days old. Normal palate, opens wide beautifully, latches well,
cheeks nicely rounded. All looks well, except...

When observing baby's tongue during BF, the tongue starts where it should be,
then disappears, then goes back to where it should be, then disappears, and
so on and so on. Tongue seems to slide back and forth over the bottom gum.
Not sure if the entire tongue is going back and forth or if it is just the
tip. Mom reports pinching pain that is related to what babys tongue is doing
(pinch release pinch release....)
Moms nipple comes out very misshapen. There is a sharp aangle at the face of
the nipple towards the roof of the mouth.
Sian did a suck eval, but baby was not real enthusiastic. Sian did not get a
good peristaltic wave motion from babys tongue.

Can anyone offer any ideas, tips, solutions, whatever to help us out? Mom
really wants to BF but she is ending up in terrible pain, nipples are already
in the bleeding stage. She is pumping to give nips a chance to heal and baby
a chance, hopefully, to mature out of this.
All help greaatly appreciated!
