Hello - I spoke with a Mother today who experiences severe acne when she is
breastfeeding. With her first child the acne began to subside around the 10th
month as the child took less breastmilk. She is currently nursing her second
child, 8 months old, and has severe, painful, inflammed, "angry" acne on both
of her checks. Were she not nursing, her doctor would treat with doxycycline
for 6 months.

She initially experienced the acne during her first and second trimester of
pregnancy with a noticeable flare up in the 3rd trimester. The day she gave
birth, she had a "massive" flare-up which was controlled to some degree by
erithromyacin and later keflex. While this worked at first, it is no longer
working. Mother does not want to wean, however she is considering trying a
partial wean to see if this helps.

Her issues with the acne are not cosmetic, though I'm sure it has an emotional
impact as well. The acne is painful and her dermatologist is predicting major
facial scars if it is not treated.

I did search the Lactnet archives and didn't much that she hasn't tried yet.

Any thoughts or ideas would be most welcome.
