Having recently spent some time on a paper for Jan Riordan's class, I'd
like to share some of what I found out about the USA and BFHI.

As of this past fall 14 US hospitals had received designation as Baby
Friendly Hospitals. Over 300 hospitals have been issued certificates of
intent to become Baby Friendly.

For a really good article on "Becoming Baby-Friendly" see the
description of the process experienced by Kaiser Permanente's Moanalua
hospital in

Clarke, L.L. and Deutsch, M.J, 1997. Becoming baby-friendly; one
hospital's journey to total quality care, Lifelines, December, 1997,
30-37.

I am intrigued by the descriptive study of Missouri hospitals'
breastfeeding practices and policies done by Syler, et al. I find the
idea of looking at practices and policies through the window of the Ten
Steps to be a good way to get a grasp on how close to the goal one might
be. Their questionnaire was derived from the Ten Steps and the
self-appraisal tool from BFHI. This might be a good tool for getting
staff and administratin to look internally at hospital practices.

The reference is:
Syler, G.P., Sarvela, P., Weishimer, K., and Anderson, S.L., 1997. A
descriptive study of breastfeeding practices and policies in Missouri
hospitals, J Hum Lact 13(2), 1997, 103-107.

Can any of you Californians tell us what happened to the Breastfeeding
Promotion legislation that is referenced in the Office of Public Affairs
press release from August, 1997. One of the top three priorities was
that there would be facilitation of the BFHI implimentation in
California hospitals.

Since what goes around in California, comes around in Nevada, I'm
wondering how soon I can hope to see this happening here?

Northern Nevada--where our new governor's budget proposal went to press
today. We don't know yet whether he is leaving our family support
program in the works or not. since it was the former governor and first
lady's special project we don't know where it is going.
