Pamela says,

Valerie's posts on the issue the point is being missed and
misconstrued.>>

I don't think the point is being misconstrued. I think the opposite is
occurring. To apply JoAnne Scott's analogy regarding the meaning of
"respect": in this case, you respect the right to patent something,
even while you do not approve or agree with what is patented. I don't
see why there's any argument over this. None of us agree with these
patents per se, but do any of us really disagree with the right to
patent something at all? IBLCE is merely saying we have to respect (ie,
not infringe on...) patented things. They are not saying we have to
like or agree with or respect the thing that is patented. We don't
argue with the right of Gerber to patent their pump. It's a crummy
pump, but they have a right to patent it. We cannot take their pump,
put our name on it and sell it as our own creation. That's what Tenet
25 says. Is it wrong to patent pumps or technology, a process or a drug?
Is it wrong to patent a name or anything else? *That* is the point
here. It's just like a law. You don't have to agree with a law. You
can work to change a law. But, in the meantime, you are supposed to
obey the law. I know we are all rebels after a fashion, to be doing
what we do, but as the old saying goes, "It is better to light a candle
than to curse the darkness." We really shouldn't be arguing over this.
We all agree on it. Really! WHAT is patented is wrong. Patenting as a
process is not. Let's stop arguing and work on fixing what's wrong.
I'm behind IBLCE on this one.

Marsha
