Once again we have disrespectful comments being made about women meeting their babies' needs when and where those needs occur. As I have said in the past, to some extent we set ourselves up for it when the only thing we talk about is the mother's right to feed her baby. Then others can argue about the rights of other adults not to observe as being on par with those rights of the mothers. What we are really talking about is the rights and needs of the baby! Let's face it, if we are only talking about the right of the mother, she can certainly wait or go somewhere else to feed her baby. What we need to be emphasizing is that it is the BABY who had a right to "eat" wherever and whenever the need arises in part because babies aren't ready yet to wait until it fits someone else's criteria to eat! All the efforts to get legislation passed regarding nursing in public etc. should be worded in terms of the rights and needs of the babies first and foremost. Not only is that at the heart of the issue, but it's a lot harder to make fun of and deny the needs of a baby. IMO this is on par with efforts to normalize breastfeeding by "Weisingerizing" our talk to put the emphasis on the disadvantages/risks of artificial feeding rather than the benefits of breastfeedidng.
