Your point is well taken.  Thank you for your comments.

I guess I was not clear in my comment that women "should not" need this form
of birth control while bf.  There are other forms of birth control that should
be explained to that will not interfere with breastfeeding.

You are very right in saying that some of the women we see in the WIC clinics
will invariably be back in our office with another unwanted pregnancy.  BUT it
is not up to the physician or other HCP to dictate that the mother must take
this form of birth control.  I assume that the HCP has the mother's best
interest in mind when discussing the Depo shot with the mom.  Whether it be
age, number of children, living conditions, finances... It is up to the mother
to make the informed choice of which type, or none at all, of birth control
she will use.  It is the HCPs responsibility to see that the mother receives
the correct information.  Yes, it can be heartbreaking to see these mothers
come back year after year with yet another unwanted pregnancy.  But, our
clients must be responsible for themselves.  No one can dictate what they must
do.  We can only give the information.  And the information will hopefully
empower them.
