I take issue with the statement that ICEA has a "non-medical approach" and
ASPO as a"highly medicalized approach." What is true is that ICEA chose to
work outside of the health are system to create change, while ASPO chose to
work within the health care system to create change. Both approaches are
essential. By working outside the health care system, one can create an
forceful awareness of the need to change. By working within the health
care system, one can more effectively implement needed changes. Each
organization's strengths and contributions to our common goals should be
recognized. It should not be a matter of which one is best.

ASPO does not have "highly medicalized approach". Throughout the years, the
Organization a worked to bring about needed changes. More recently, ASPO
spear-headed the development of the CMIS document which promotes a
non-invasive, non-intervention approach to childbirth. You can access the
CMIS document at <http://www.clicked.com/babytime/cims_circulate.html>.
All major childbirth/breastfeeding groups ratified the CMIS document except
ICEA. As an ICEA member (also ASPO) I was disappointed that the
Organization chose not to ratify the document. A list of all the groups
who ratified the CIMS document can be found at the website listed.
