With respect to a baby not taking a bottle and mom having to return to work,
my favourite idea to try first personally is the reusable Rubbermaid straw
"juice boxes" like on this page
http://www.rubbermaid.com/rubbermaid/product/product.jhtml?prodId=HPProd100043
or
their "clones" (I have no interest in Rubbermaid as a company personally).
You can use them sitting up if baby prefers that, you can squeeze gently to
let baby know there is something that will come out, they start sucking on
them pretty quickly after they realize that usually, it is very far removed
from a breast in shape/form/texture AND as an added bonus: you don't have
to ever wean from them like a bottle or even a sippy cup since it is
perfectly acceptable for kids of all ages to drink from them. They make
straight plain ones too.

If a baby would prefer to lie down actually, you can remove the straw on the
inside and use it so you have to tip your head back to get anything out.

My older daughter uses one at school every day for her water. Once they've
mastered this kind of idea with a "straw", they can go to sports bottles
with straws in them that they can't squeeze (so there won't be any messy
spills all over).

Someone else mentioned sippy cups...I used those with both my children from
4 mos onwards, but with the valve removed (otherwise they couldn't figure
out that they had to suck to get the liquid out until they were closer to a
year). Little open top cups can work too though can be messier. Then there
is always spoon or dropper feeding for tiny newborns...
