The ignorance would be laughable if it weren't so cruel and damaging - to wean
the two year olds who seem to need breastmilk the most!

I know a pale little blond girl, almost 3, who is at the top of the growth
charts, very secure and willing to stay with people other than her mom, and a
big fan of dairy foods (especially ice cream). She did have some persistent
eczema as an infant, and she resembles her highly allergic pale blond aunt
(who was not breastfed). This child nurses 12 or more times on some days, 4
or less on others - depending on what else is going on in the family's life.
Her mom says that she eats a variety of foods (lots of fruit), but less than
half the quantity of food she would eat if she were weaned. The child is
picky, but probably not because of food sensitivities - she just prefers junk
food! If she were in the hospital being studied for behavioral problems I'm
sure she would develop them - but at home she is a well adjusted, outgoing,
athletic, healthy child. I'm quite certain that two and three year olds who
enjoy nursing come in all temperaments, complexions, and sizes - and there is
nothing pathological about it!

So, Carolyn, please help that Mum get some sane information about what is
normal and build her confidence up so that she quits cowering in the presence
of HCPs who are stuck in the dark ages (1950s ?) of breastfeeding. Her child
is counting on you.
