I'm curious what the response will be from docs. I heard a mother tell me just yesterday "pump and throw the milk away from the affected side" Thank goodness the mother called and asked advice from someone else.

I had an email from a mother today who visited an Urgent Care center to
get a script for antibiotics to treat a case of mastitis. The MD told her
to discontinue breastfeeding on the affected side. If I had a nickel for
every time I heard this...

I know a couple of mothers who discontinued breastfeeding due to this
advice (I met them after they stopped breastfeeding, and boy, were they
ticked off to learn that they could have continued!).

Is this just a case of outdated information, or is this still what MDs are
taught? Perhaps one of the great docs on this list can enlighten me (Dr.
Gordon?) I understand that GPs cannot be expected to be up-to-date in
every specialty, but lactation is part of the normal course of a woman's
reproductive cycle, and this is not an uncommon condition, especially in
my neck of the woods, where many mothers like to schedule feeds (a related
issue, of course!)
