PTP: a client of mine is breastfeeding a 19 mo old 4-6x/day. She recently conceived then miscarried at 5 weeks. Three Health Care Providers have told her to stop breastfeeding if she wants to conceive and be able to carry a baby fullterm. She does not want to do this but worries that she "caused" the miscarraige. She is doing fertility charting and noticed that her luteal phase is less than 10 days, indicating a possible temporary luteal phase defect. She is wondering if her current extended breastfeeding contributed to her miscarraige and if she attempts to conceive again if she will again miscarry? She has done research and thinks that the fact that she is still breastfeeding her 19 mo old should no longer be affecting her return to fertility but she is unsure and has not been able to find any information on this. Will her luteal phase ALWAYS be less than 10 or will it gradually lengthen, so she will eventually be able to fully support the implantation. Does breastfeeding at this stage, 19 mos post-partum, affect the corpus luteum which secretes progesterone? These are her questions and she obviously has done her research! She has used the book Taking Charge of your Fertility by Toni Weschler.

Is there any research that tells us that breastfeeding while very early pregnant causes miscarriage?
