I have to second Barbara Wilson Clay's post on the rewards of
professional speaking. It's definately "worth it" overall for me,
because I love meeting all my Lactnet friends in person, and I love
sharing information about my passions - but it is a money losing
proposition compared to spending the same amount of time seeing clients.
I'm especially cognizent of this today, having just spent another
several hundred bucks on video editing stuff to optimize the little
videos I show in my Powerpoint presentations.

On the other side of the issue, as the conference coordinator for my
ILCA affiliate several times over the years, I can see how lactation
consultant associations often cannot afford to pay speakers the way that
hospitals and for profit conference producers can. We recently explored
getting a prominent feeding therapist to come and do a conference, and
she (deservedly) wanted several thousand dollars a day, plus expenses.
Until breastfeeding is a bigger priority in our society, I fear that
such disparities will persist. Sigh.
