Pumps work by pulling milk out of the breast by subjecting the nipple to
a vacuum, which increases the pressure differential between inside the
breast and outside. When the pressure is reached that overcomes the
resistence of the muscles, they let go and the milk sprays or drips out.

Interesting. It is my understanding that pumps work by pulling the breast
tissue into the tunnel of the flange, far enough to compress the breast, which
then squirts the milk out. And I usually size the pump flange to obtain this
fit....
In fact, we just discussed this at our local Coalition meeting. Since the
person who presented this topic is also on this list, perhaps she would share.
She explains it much better than I can. (Becky???)
