Pat raised an intriguing question on the impact of our high-paced, highly
stressful lives on milk ejection and lactation in modern western life. While
I've made an argument for the robustness of lactation overall, I also want
to acknowledge that milk ejection issues may bear more examination. Milk
ejection in many ways is the "hidden" component of milk production and often
misinterpreted both directions. On the one hand, I have mothers with
legitimate low milk supply who may think that poor let-down is the problem
when the lack of let-down sensation really is secondary to poor milk volume;
on the other hand, having milk but not seeing much come out really often is
a function of the milk ejection response, and I've seen cases of this, too.
There is a lot for the skilled lactation consultant to tease out through
history taking and observation, most especially being able to accurately
determine the role of daily stress (as opposed to trauma).

My question: How many LCs out there have cases that they feel they have
definitely pinpointed as low supply secondary to milk ejection inhibition
due to chronic life/lifestyle stress? Has anyone been paying special
attention to this potentially increasing phenomenon? It would be
interesting to document this.
