Riordan and Auerbach have a nice chapter about private practices in office
settings in their book, and Counseling the Nursing Mother also discusses
practice settings. I practiced in an office setting for a number of years
and feel that it is impt. to have comfort stations for new moms that offer a
bathroom, a changing table for the baby, a way to dispose of diapers, hand
washing facilities, a comfortable chair, privacy, etc. Access to an
accurate scale is very useful since the babies one sees in private practice
are, by definition, not experiencing a problem free start. I found it best
to write case notes as soon as possible so as not to forget details, and to
report to the supervising physician within 24 hrs for standard problems and
immed. by ph. if there was something that required urgent attention. I fax
my reports because it is quicker.
