Amy said, << In the photo, the nipple length appears quite long, and I
wonder if it would cause many babies to gag before their lips were able
to accept a portion of the base.>>

The length of the nipple was my first concern as well when I looked at
the photos just now. I CANNOT ABIDE long-nippled bottles. Many babies
cannot latch onto the base on long nipples so they end up opening their
mouths just a teeny bit (only wide enough to accept the nipple - no need
to open wide for the base if the nipple is too damn long to reach it!)
If baby gets used to a long artificial nipple before learning to latch
well there are often two outcomes:

1) Mom also has long nipples and routinely gets BIT or otherwise hurt
2) Mom does not have long nipples and baby WON'T LATCH because he's
looking for a long hard nipple to inadvertently hurt and can't find one
on mom.

And now Medela has perpetrated this? ARRRGGGG. (Not that I'm surprised.)

They can't tell me it'll eliminate nipple confusion; as far as I'm
concerned there is more than one kind.

Just my my clinical experience talking.....
