Hi Barb,

*Disclaimer* This is only MY opinion, but here it goes.....
What would I do/say?
1.Every smoker knows that smoking is bad for their health, telling them once
more doesn't *add* anything to that (it even makes some people smoke even
more!).
2.Great that she wants to breastfeed this child!
3.Make here aware of the disadvantages of passive smoking, but give her
*solutions* if she really can't or won't quit (i.e. try not to smoke near
the baby, try to go outside or something like that).
4.If she's *really* *in need* of a cigarette, tell her to smoke it *after*
a feed, not just before.
5. I guess this is just another case of outweighing the benefits/risks. In
my opinion it's better to smoke and breastfeed, than to smoke and give
artificial formula.
And yes, she smokes an awful lot of cigarettes a day, I'd really try to
explain her to cut back as much as possible. Maybe telling her about a
possible delayed let-down could give her just that push she needs.

Hope this helps,
