To respond to the many posts on CMP challenge. This is
not neccessarily to start the baby on cow's milk. Mom would
like some foods with dairy. The problem with doing it by
mom introducing foods slowly into her diet is that a small
percentage of allergic children will have an anaphylatic reaction,
a severe allergic reaction with hives, air way swelling and
droping blood pressure. I frown apon my pateints doing that at
home. (BTW Rachelle, Bob Baldassano trained me.) For this
reason the challenges are done in the office. I did once see a
HCP give the family of a CMP allergic child who failed 1 y/o
challenge soy formula as they had trouble paying for
elemental formulas. He went home drank it and anaphylaxed.
He fortunately lived.
