For June Nichols' posting :  "What is a manatee?"
A very large aquatic mammal who lives in the coastal areas of the Caribbean 
and Southern waterways.....in Florida we see them in our canals that have 
access to the ocean and bays.  They resemble a seal or a walrus without tusks and 
grow to be quite hefty.  They are often endangered by boat propellers, fishing 
lines, fishing nets and six pack plastic holders.  They dine on vegetation in 
these areas and have been encouraged to help manage a water vegetation called 
hydra.  They are slow moving and very docile.  They are very relaxing to 
watch.  They are often found in sewer pipes and drainage culverts because of 
following food or big rains.  They are rehabed frequently at places like SeaWorld 
and the Miami Seaquarium.  And when they give birth at these facilities they 
make the news. To protect the manatees is a popular ecological theme in Florida.
