As Kathleen said, I'd want to see the reference on this before I considered
such a drastic, life-altering step as weaning. That's an obvious Step One.

I'm also intrigued by someone's suggestion, a few years ago, that the *mom*
live temporarily on whatever it is they're recommending the baby be weaned
to, as a very logical Step Two. Presumably the formula is a complete food
and will sustain her just fine in the short-term, and while it would drive
her nuts for a few days, it would give a reasonable trial of whether weaning
to this new food would help the *baby*. (It would also give her a taste,
literally, of what a life on hypoallergenic formula must be like.) If mom's
diet is restricted to the formula, the baby would be receiving nothing but
nicely filtered food (albeit still including cow and corn and soy). If
they're concerned about secondary lactose intolerance... well, that's easily
dealt with using lactase drops.

If the baby shows no at all improvement after a few days, it's not the
breastmilk, and his problems wouldn't be helped by removing that potent
force for good from his life. And if the baby does improve with mom on
formula, mom can then start adding foods again, and the culprits should be
pretty easy to spot.

Not the most fun technique in the world, but interesting, entirely do-able,
and totally without the serious longterm consequences of weaning the baby!
