WIC was designed as a supplemental nutrition program. But moms can have the
idea that they are going to get all the formula they need for their
babies....This is not true. I believe they get enough for about a ten pound
baby.

I remember one of our nurses who did home visits, talking about the fact
that moms ran out of formula earlier in the month, because the babies got
bigger and needed more food. And then the babies stalled on weight gain -
no money for formula/food for the baby at the end of the month. We would
hope someone had donated some to the Drop In Center.

So as a public health measure, is it good to feed babies? Yes.

Look at some of the studies over the years from bottle feeding/formula
feeding communities. I don't have the citation here but one study from a
small community in Pennsylvania found that by 6 months, only 13% of moms
were breastfeeding AT ALL - which would mean you might not ever see anyone
breastfeeding. Or know anyone that breastfed.

If "comfort with formula feeding" (Nommsen-River, I think 2010) is one of
the factors in how you choose to feed your baby -- we still have work to
do, and most particularly with WIC moms, who by definition of the program
are lower income than moms who don't qualify for WIC. They have a harder
time imagining themselves breastfeeding their babies.

So - we have work to do. Go Beyonce, Go Best for Babes, Go all of us
(whoops - do you see me on the podium behind Susan and Sonya?)
