Dear Friends:
I have had many mothers with this situation. Sometimes it even disturbs
the initial babymoon phase of mothering when the student is more worried
about the classroom commitments than the mother is about the newborn. Some
mothers have responded positively to suggestions 1)not to ask permission to
bring a newborn to class, 2) sit in the back so an exit can be made easily if
necessary, and 3) tape the lecture if possible. Other students will make a
fuss over the new baby at first, but a matter-of-fact attitude will teach
people that babies can be integrated into life.
Women have bf while in the legislature, this is a model.
The first 6 months of life is frequently easy with babies. They stay put,
they sleep and nurse a lot. It is when baby becomes mobile that the challenge
starts; but by then, it is easier to leave baby and solids have been
introduced.
I have known a mother to wean or to bf twice a day because school
commitments came before parenting. This makes me very sad, but it isn't my
life.
   Warmly,
