I remember talking to a veteran and dearly loved pediatrician.  He claims
that in his early days of practice, babies' cords came off much earlier than
they do now.  He says that now, with the triple dye after birth and alcohol
swabbing with every diaper change, we are preserving them!  The record he's
seen?  Seven weeks!
