You are so right, it is very heartening to see that cancer is more and more often treatable. It is disheartening
to see people younger and younger having to face it.

Whether and how a woman navigates pregnancy, cancer and breastfeeding depends on the form of cancer
and treatment protocols. The women we are hearing from cannot continue breastfeeding when they are in chemo, they
want to pump while they are in treatments so they can continue breastfeeding when treatments are completed.
This can take months, and the treatment leave one sick and exhausted, making pumping both a positive thing
to do and difficult to sustain.

My question is what resources are available to these women for good information and mostly support. Other
mothers who are doing it, or have done it. Since these women are still few and far between, fortunately,
I imagine such support will have to come online where distances are shrunk. Also oncologists
who are treating moms also need information. It seems a perfect place for cancer education and support
organizations and breastfeeding groups to collaborate.

i imagine there is also room for research on how better to treat women and allow them to continue breastfeeding,
or at least make the time they have to pump and dump shorter.

Dear Lactnet Friends:

One of the changes in my career is that cancer has gone from a death
sentence to a huge bump in the road for many people. When I started in
college to be a nurse, one was lucky to survive, much less to have a baby.

Now, pregnant ladies are receiving chemotherapy, and so are lactating
ones. Cancer is no longer on the list of contraindications for
breastfeeding. More research is being published about this.

The waitress at a local diner was diagnosed at 19 weeks gestation, was
treated, and gave birth to a healthy baby.

warmly,
