I, too, have been worried about this issue. I spend most of my time with LLL
people whose toddlers nurse the way mine did - very frequently!! But
recently I was at a gathering of non-LLL people, and was very struck by the
seven-month-old who clearly wanted to nurse, but was being put off by her
mother. When I commented that the baby seemed to want to nurse, the mother
said "Oh, she can't, I just fed her two hours ago." and continued to offer
her teething biscuits to eat and other foods from her plate. Eventually the
mother gave her a sip of water from her cup. Nothing wrong with any of those
things, but that baby wanted to nurse!! (And it wasn't just being
uncomfortable with nursing in front of others, the mother told me - quite
proudly - that her baby only nurses four times a day now. Later, of course,
I overheard her talking to someone else about the baby being constipated
....)
