I've heard Chele Marmet use this technique in a lecture. I don't know who
originated it. However, this pediatrician needs to be less paternalistic
and more focused on getting mothers accurate help. Where is the research
(I'm not always a fan of evidence-based information, because I've seen some
really shlocky studies) that proves that dressings are appropriate as a
treatment for sore nipples.

I'd recommend going back to basics. Latch Latch and more latch .
