Since I recieved quite a few private emails asking for more
information, I thought I would post on Lactnet so everyone could get the
same info.
My daughter's title was DIGESTION. She sought to compare the
digestability of humanmilk, cow's milk, and formula. On the right side
of her board she stated that breastmilk was easier for babies to digest
followed by some other advantages to breastfeeding. The center of her
board had her title and objective followed by the experiment. The
experiment included adding 2/3 cup of white vinegar to 1/3 cup of milk.
She expland the rationale for this as was given to us by Lisa Marasco
who recieved it from Donna J. Spannaus-Martin, Ph.D. Assistant
Professor, Clinical Lab Sciences, Univer. of TN, Memphis. My daughter
sighted her source. On the left hand side of her board she posted the
results and her conclusion. On the table in front of her board she had
the different tubes along with literature from LLL in spanish about the
benifets of breastfeeding. There is a large population of spanish
speaking parents whose children attend the school, so I thought having
the spanish literature added and extra appeal. She also had the story
from the Texas WIC NEWS (March 1997 Volume 6, Number3) titled Baby's
first food can influence vision, intelligence, motor developmbent by
Nancy Liedtke, M.S. At this piont I just want to say thank-you to
Texas WIC. You truely have been a leader in the breastfeeding community
in terms of what should be going on at all WIC centers.

Results were: Cow's milk curdled right away.
Formula appeared to stay the same.
Breastmilk became slightly thinner and slighty changed colors.

Hours later(we don't have the exact time because we finished late the
night before the fair) When she woke up the following morning 7:00am she
checked her tubes and had to quickly add what she observed to her
results. So she ended up with immediate results and hours later.
Hours later
Cow's milk was still curdled
The formula had completely seperated from the vinegar. We concluded
that formula did not mix well with digestive juices.
The breastmilk stayed mixed and had a very thin white layer on top.

My daughter also had a tube of pure breastmilk to show how breastmilk
sperates as it is not homogenized and she wanted to explain this as she
challenged the kids to pick which tube contained the breastmilk.

Final note: we used carnation good start.

Sorry for going on so long,
Assunta
