I have a few questions after reading all these posts about the SoP. I am NOT
an IBCLC but always planned on becoming one. After BW-C's post today,
though, I am confused. Please help.

From Barbara Wilson-Clay's post:
Require and obtain consent to share clinical concerns and information
with the physician or other primary health care provider before initiating
consultation.

So, does this mean that all IBCLCs, hospital or private practice have to get
in touch with the baby and/or mom's doctors or midwife before the consult?
What about moms who come to you on their own, not as a referral?

If so, what if they need help today and the care provider doesn't get back
to you, give you the go-ahead, etc? My primary care doc (who sees my whole
family) doesn't get a call from my herbalist, doctor, dentist right? Is that
different?

Do you always send a report to the pediatrician and if appropriate the
OB/primary/midwife?

I guess I just thought LC's kept their own records (private practice) and
would send records to a doc/midwife if it concerned them, but didn't contact
for every problem (like sore nipples or mastitis that doesn't need
antibiotics, etc).

Thanks for clearing it up.

Micky
